Born in Peshawar on June 7, 1945, Anwar belongs to the influential Saifullah family, part of the Marwat tribe. His mother, Begum Kulsum Saifullah, was also a notable political figure. He is the brother of Salim and Humayun Saifullah Khan, and the son-in-law of former President Ghulam Ishaq Khan. His family connections extend to Ayub Khan’s family through his son-in-law, Omar Ayub Khan.
Education & Business:
Anwar was educated at the University of Peshawar and Christ Church, Oxford. He joined the family business and became co-chairman of Saif Group, a major Pakistani business group, in 1984.
Political Experience:
Anwar was elected to the Senate from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa in 1990, serving until 1997 as a member of the Pakistan Muslim League (Junejo). He served as Federal Minister of Environment and Urban Affairs (1990–1993) and later as Federal Minister for Petroleum and Natural Resources (1994–1996) in coalition with Benazir Bhutto’s government.
In the 2008 elections, he won two provincial assembly seats from Lakki Marwat and joined the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP). Though considered for the Governor position in KP, political opposition led to his appointment as PPP KP President. He stepped down after the 2013 elections.
Anwar Saifullah Khan remains a respected figure in both political and business circles in Pakistan.
